Discovering Auckland

My first days in New Zealand could have not been any better. I have been warmly welcome by Sebastien and Sophie – a French couple I met through my friend Sylvie with whom I worked in London. As you will discover soon, they took great care of me and made sure I could see the best of Auckland. They live in Point Chevalier, a cosy and quiet residential area I first discovered while jogging in the morning...

As you may already know, I have contemplated to work and live in New Zealand in 2009 so I was really impatient to get to discover Auckland as my potential next “hometown”. On Saturday, I went off walking up and down the streets of the “City Of Sails” blessed by an unusually persistent sunshine and strong spring flowers scents.

Mes premiers jours en Nouvelle Zélande n’auraient pu être meilleurs. J’ai été très chaleureusement acceuillie par Sébastien et Sophie – un couple français dont j’ai fait la connaissance grâce à ma copine Sylvie avec qui je travaillais à Londres. Comme vous le découvrirez bien vite, ils m’ont vraiment chouchouté et ont pris grand soin de me faire découvrir le meilleur d’Auckland. Ils vivent à Point Chevalier, un quartier résidentielle vraiment sympa et tranquille que j’ai commencé à découvrir lors de mes joggings matinaux…

Vous le savez peut-être déjà, j’envisage de venir travailler et vivre en Nouvelle Zélande en 2009 donc j’étais vraiment impatiente de découvrir Auckland en tant que potentiel prochain port d’attache. Samedi, je suis donc partie pour une exploration pédestre des rues de la « Ville des Voiles », bénie par un soleil inhabituellement persistant et de lourdes odeurs de fleurs printanières.

 

With such favorable conditions, I must admit that I really liked all what I’ve seen of the city. It’s for me the perfect sized city, and seems to gather just what I’d need of markets, parks, trendy and classic shops… plus I really like its location by the sea. Within minutes, one can walk in a luxuriously green environment and then stroll the harbour… I followed Seb’s recomendations and visited the fish market, the viaduct harbour, the princess wharf before turning into Queens Street (one of the main streets) and bumping into the Sky Tower – visible from anywhere in town.

Dans de telles conditions, je dois avouer que j’ai vraiment aimé tout ce que j’ai pu voir de la ville. C’est pour moi une ville de taille parfaite, qui semble rassembler juste ce dont j’aurai besoin en terme de marchés, de parcs, de magasins traditionels et un peu plus « tendances »… et surtout, j’aime beaucoup le fait qu’elle borde la mer. En quelques minutes, on peut passer d’un parc débordant de végétation puis se ballader le long des quais… J’ai suivi les conseils de Seb et visité le marché poissonnier, le port, ses différents quais avant de bifurquer dans Queens Street (une des artères principales) et d’aller me cogner au pied de la Sky Tower – visible des 4 coins de la ville.

On Sunday, Seb and So offered to show me the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park as well as Karekare Beach, where was filmed the movie « The Piano ». We stopped briefly in Titirangi to grab a panini and drove to the visitor center of Waitakere first. There, we could enjoy the vista southwards and get some more infrmation about the lolcal flora and fauna. We also took the opportunity to pose with next to traditional maori statues – very similar to the ones I’d seen in New Caledonia !

Dimanche, Seb et So me proposèrent d’aller voir le parc régional de Waitakere ainsi que la plage Karekare où fut tourné le film « La Leçon de Piano ». On s’arrêta brièvement à Titirangi pour un panini puis au centre de visiteurs de Waitakere. Là, on a pu profiter de la vue sonnant vers le sud, et glaner un peu plus d’informations sur la faune et flore locales. On en a aussi profité pour poser aux cotés de statues maori – assez semblables à celles que j’avais croisé en Nouvelle Calédonie !

 

We were not the only one willing to get the most out of the sunny weather and heading to the Karekare beach : the carpark was unusually full so we drove past it looking for some more room. Doing so, we spotted a waterfall and decided to walk closer to it. Afterwards, we walked in the opposite direction towards the ocean and climbed up a little track to get an overview of the beach before walking on it.

Everything was just so beautiful and colorful : the vegetation, the black sand, the blue-green ocean breaking into white waves!! A very inspiring place indeed...

On ne fut pas les seuls a vouloir profiter du joli temps et à se diriger vers la plage de Karekare : le parking était plein, ce qui nous força à le dépasser pour chercher plus de place. Ce faisant, on a remarqué une belle cascade et décidé de s’en approcher à pied. Plus tard, on marcha en direction opposée vers l’océan et escalada un sentier pour avoir une vue aérienne de la plage avant de la remonter à pied.

Tout était tellement beau et coloré : la végétation, le sable noir, l’océan bleu-vert qui se brisait dans l’écume blanche des vagues !! Un endroit propice à l’inspiration…

 

And to conclude what already was a fabulous day, Seb and So invited me to the Orbit Restaurant which is..... yes! That one at the top of the SkyTower!! We met there their friend David and enjoy a really nice meal gazing over the lights of Auckland by night. The platform where the tables are revolves around the center of the tower so that the view changes all the time... 

Not to forget the very fine food : I had a “Roast pumpkin and Chive soup finished with blue cheese crème fraîche” followed by some “Pan-Fried Red Snapper, served with a Herbs and Corn Risotto and Baby Cress Salad” and “Rhubarb and Vanilla Panna cotta with almond biscuit, amaretto foam and rhubarb coulis”.

I actually can’t find the right words to describe how unique and special this experience was. But I know I will remember it for ever!

Et pour conclure ce qui fut d’ores et déjà une journée fabuleuse, Seb et So m’ont invitée au Restaurant Orbit qui est… oui ! tout en haut de la Sky Tower !! On y a retrouvé leur ami David et savouré un repas très agréable en admirant les lumières d’Auckland dans son habit de nuit. La plate-forme où se trouvent les tables tourne autour du center de la tour si bien que la vue change continuellement..

Sans oublier les plats très fins qui nous furent servis : je pris une « Soupe de Potiron et de Ciboulette soulignée d’une touche de crème fraîche au bleu », suivie d’une « Perche Rouge poêlée accompagnée d’un risotto d’herbes et de maïs au cresson » et d’un « Panna cotta Vanille-Rhubarbe aux macarons, mousse d’amaretto et coulis de rhubarbe ».

En fait, je trouve pas vraiment le smots pour décrire à quel point cette expéience fut unique et spéciale. Mais je sais que je ne l’oublierai jamais !
