Crusing Pearl Bay - Airlie Beach

Just back from more than a week spent out in the sea – the entire time… I can’t remember when was the last time I spent 8 days deep into the wild – without any human contact (except into our own yacht of course !!), without phone range, internet, money…. I just loved being far from any kind of civilisation… I think I’m slowly turning into an ermit oooops !

We’re now in Airlie Beach and have already completed our shopping/laundry/shower missions so we’re about to go sailling again !! Yeah !!

That’s also means I have no much time to write that article - so please excuse the rushed style but you know… it has to be short ! I tried to add so more details into the photo album though…. So have a look there for more anecdotes :

Tout juste de retour sur terre après plus d’une semaine passée en mer – tout ce temps… Je ne me rappelle pas de la dernière occasion que j’ai eu de passer 8 jours  continuellement immergée en pleine nature – sans contact humain (hormis, bien sûr à bord du voilier), sans réseau de portable, sans Internet, sans argent… J’ai savouré chaque minute éloignée de la moindre trace de civilisation… J’ai bien peur de me transformer doucement en ermite oups !

On est maintenant à Airlie Beach où nous avons déjà accompli nos missions course/lessive/douche donc on est à nouveau sur le départ… Youpi !!

Ca veut aussi dire que j’ai peu de temps pour écrire cet article – excusez le style précipité mais bon, vous savez … je dois faire court !!  J’ai essayer d’inclure plus de détails dans l’album photo par contre… Donc jetez y un coup d’œil pour quelques anecdotes supplémentaires :

This time, the weather has not always been really gorgeous – on our first leg from Yeppoon to Pearl Bay, we actually had quite a lot of wind and also some big big swell ! It was pretty impressive to see Marutji going through the waves, sometimes carried by them, some other time pushed from one side to the other . Anyhow, all in all, we made it to Pearl Bay. Rick teased me as I was helming between the two rocks that stand at the entrance of the bay…. He said he had never seen me so nervous before – well I wasn’t nervous, I was concentrated !! It’s not everyday that I steer a boat in such conditions !

Cette fois, le beau temps n’a pas toujours été de la partie – lors de notre premier passage entre Yeppoon et Pearl Bay, on a eu vachement de vent et pas mal de houle !! C’était assez impressionnant de voir Marutji affronter les vagues, parfois portée par elles, d’autres fois ballottée de part en part. Quoi qu’il en soit, au final, on est arrivé sans souci. Rick se moquait de moi alors que j’étais à la barre pour franchir l’entrée de la baie gardée par deux blocs de rochers… Il disait ne m’avoir jamais vu aussi nerveuse auparavant – bein, j’étais pas nerveuse, j’étais concentrée – nuance ! C’est pas tous les jours que je dirige un bateau dans de tels circonstances !

Pearl Bay was a really really handsome spot and Julien and I went discovering the beach (while poor Rick was repairing the battery of the engine !!). That was the occasion for many pictures as you can imagine. We stayed two nights in that anchorage before moving on to Townshend Island and then Hunter Island – which is part of the Duke Island group. The next leg to Digby Island ended with big winds and swells as the weather completely changed just about an hour before we arrived to the anchorage. I was helming the boat, pulling the tiller with the energy I had left… but sailing in such a rough weather was so… exhilarating ! I loved it !

Pearl Bay était vraiment super jolie et Julien et moi ommes allé découvrir la plage (pendant que le pauvre Rick réparait les batteries du moteur !!). Ce fut l’occasion de prendre des milliers de photos, comme vous pouvez l’imaginer. On est resté ancrés 2 nuits avant de continuer notre parcours vers Townshend Island et ensuite Hunter Island – qui fait partie du groupe des îles Duke. Le passage suivant jusqu’à Digby Island s’est terminé avec beaucoup de vents (jusqu’à 40km) et de houle alors que le temps s’est complètement transformé environ une heure avant l’arrivée à notre ancrage. Je dirigeais le bateau, en tirant la barre avec toute l’énergie qu’il me restait… mais naviguer dans ce temps était tellement… excitant ! J’ai a-do-ré !

The next day was too rough to leave Digby so we enjoyed a day off aboard Marutji and the next day, we left really early to Scawfell Island. That is when Rick decided to turn into a reporter from Marutji – here’s the result :

Le jour suivant était trop agité pour quitter Digby donc on a profité d’une journée de repos à bord de Marutji et c’est le jour suivant que nous sommes partis aux aurores pour Scawfell Island. C’est alors que Rick s’est transformé en reporter spécial – voilà le résultat :

The last two days, we sailed from Shaw Island ( for us, the first  official Island from the famous group of Cumberland Island – also known as Whitsunday Islands) to Airlie Beach. On the way, we’ve seen many whales and even one which I believe was having a baby ( because she stood upside down, her tail out of the water for about 20 minutes or so). By respect, we didn’t get any closer but it was a special moment for me to witness such an event…

Now we’re just about to leave the marina of Airlie Beach to discover the beauty of the Whitsundays for a couple of days… sadly Julien left us this morning to go working in Sydney so i’m the only French left on the vessel… but that might change soon….

Les deux derniers jours, on a navigué de Shaw Island ( pour nous, la première île officiellement comprise dans le groupe des îles Cumberland – également connues sous le nom des Whitsundays) à Airlie Beach. En chemin, on a vu pleins de baleines et même une qui semblait être en train d’accoucher (parce qu’elle restait à l’envers, la queue hors de l’eau pendant prés de 20 minutes) Par respect, on ne s’est pas approché mais c’était vraiment un moment spécial…

Maintenant on s’apprête à quitter Airlie pour faire le tour des Whitsundays pendant quelques jours… dommage que Julien nous quitte pour aller travailler à Sydney – maintenant je suis la seule Frenchie à bord… mais ça pourrait changer très bientôt…
